Clara was caught up in Sarah’s enthusiasm and excitement. She seemed to explode with life. After the trying year since her mother’s death, Clara hadn’t felt this emotion in a long, long while. Not since her childhood when she had both parents by her side.

Sarah’s enthusiasm was infectious as they picked out their dresses for their morning outing, the room filled with laughs and giggles. Sarah’s maid had just finished styling their hair in the latest fashion, yet Clara feared it was a wasted effort as it would be covered up with their bonnets.

“Nonsense,” Sarah replied when she voiced her concern. “We shall know how well our hair is styled even if no one may see it.”

Clara shook her head as she watched Sarah remove a velvet green Spencer from her wardrobe. “Why does that matter?”

Sarah laughed as she held Spencer up towards Clara. “If you feel beautiful, then you are beautiful, and everyone around you will believe it too. I think this color will work for you. It always makes me look pale. Although the weather is warming up, I think we should wear a jacket. These will show off our beautiful gowns while keeping us warm.” Sarah handed her the emerald-green Spencer while she turned and picked out a pale blue one for herself.

Clara finished buttoning the silver clasps and turned before the mirror.

“It’s lovely,'' she exclaimed.

“You are lovely,” Sarah replied looking over her shoulder at their reflection. “When Mr. Garrick sees you, he will become even more enamored than he is already.”

Clara could feel her cheeks grow warm as Sarah turned to pick up two pairs of gloves, handing a pair to her.

Mr. Garrick had been attentive last night at the dance, more so than any other gentleman. Although he only danced with her as many times as deemed appropriate, the young man stayed by her side engaging her in conversation at the exclusion of other gentlemen.

Clara found Sheldon leaning against the fireplace when she and Sarah entered the parlor.

Tall and graceful, but strong and rooted. His powerful shoulders filled out his jacket to perfection with his neatly tied cravat. Everything about Sheldon would have been intimidating if she didn’t know how much he cared about them, about her.

Last night at the Assembly rooms, the young ladies were vying for his attention. Except for a turn with her and Sarah, he hadn’t danced with any other young lady, only milled about observing the young gentlemen who danced with her. He was truly taking his role as guardian seriously. Clara hoped he didn’t put Mr. Garrick off.

As if on cue, a knock sounded at the door and Margretta answered, letting Mr. Garrick in.

“Mr. Garrick, I’d like to introduce Mr. Sheldon Greyson, Miss Fontaine’s guardian.” Lady Bardsley made the introductions as Sheldon stepped forward.

“Mr. Greyson,” Mr. Garrick’s charm and good looks showed as he nodded and took Sheldon’s offered hand.

“Mr. Garrick, Lady Bardsley assures me you are a gentleman and will have the ladies home on time.”

Clara stifled a smile as she watched her guardian interrogate the young admirer.
